  1. 1. Day one

    Arrive in Windermere

Arrive at your hotel just outside of Windermere. The Gilpin will be your base for the next 3 nights. Settle in, soak up the scenery and take a deep breath of that famous fresh air. Welcome to the Lake District!

  2. 2. Day two

    The Coffin Trail

Today begins with a short transfer to Ambleside, a charming town just a short journey away from Windermere. From here, pick up The Coffin Trail, a gorgeous low-level walk which goes right past two of Wordsworth's homes, Rydal Mount and Dove Cottage, which are both open to visitors. Soak up the scenery that so inspired one of England's most famous writers as the route gently rises and falls, affording fabulous views of Rydal Water and Grasmere Lake down below, and Loughrigg Terrace (which you can opt to climb if you feel up to it on the day) up above. Pause and admire the view at White Moss common, and then descend into the lovely village of Grasmere for lunch. Be sure to visit the churchyard of St Oswalds before looping back to Ambleside along the western shore of Rydal Water.

  3. 3. Day three

    Winster Valley

Today, take a circular walk and explore the timeless and unspoilt beauty of Winster Valley. No need to hop in a car for this one - simply step out of the hotel's front door and you're on your way! Visit the hamlet of Mitchelland, walk through grassy pastures, up stony tracks, cross rivers, rub shoulders with local grazing sheep and cattle and admire Knipe Tarn.

     7 miles (11 km)

  4. 4. Day four

    Crinkle Crags and Bowfell

The Langdale Valley is absolutely fabulous but a little less known than some of the other valleys in Lakeland, which means it's an ideal choice if you want to get off the beaten track and escape the crowds. The Crinkle Crags offer incredible terrain for walkers of all levels of abilities and experience. It's up to you, but we recommend taking a guide today, which we've factored in to the cost. We will transfer you to the start of this circular route. From the summit point, looking back into the Langdale Valley is simply breathtaking and gives a real sense of achievement from the height you have climbed. We love it! At the end of the route, we will pick you up and transfer you to your hotel for the next two nights, the Sharrow Bay on Ullswater, where a cup of tea and your bags will be waiting for you.

  5. 5. Day five

Helvellyn - the big one! We recommend taking a guide if you're not completely confident in your navigation and OS map reading skills, so we've factored one in for today. There are a countless number of ways to approach and ascend this peak, this route via Striding Edge and Swirrel Edge gives you a bit of time to warm up with a relatively easy-going first section. Opt for scrambling or non-scrambling routes as you ascend Striding Edge (depending on your preference), pausing to take in the views of Red Tarn below, and then press on to the summit of Helvellyn. Stop for a celebratory biscuit and photo up on top, before making your way back down Swirrel Edge.

  6. 6. Day six

    Glenridding and Howtown

Begin today with a picturesque boat ride aboard a steamer from Howtown to Glenridding on our favourite lake, Ullswater. Your route then winds its way back to Howtown, combining fabulous views of Ullswater lake with the majesty of the Cumbrian fells. There's a real variety in terrain too, as the path moves through many different aspects of the countryside, from becks to valleys to woods and crags. There's also some pretty impressive local flora and fauna to discover en route too. Return by transfer to your hotel and depart at your leisure - or extend the trip for a few more days and let us plan some more walks for you!
